Old English hōf, from Proto-Germanic *xōfaz (compare Dutch hoef, German Huf, Swedish huv), from Proto-Indo-European *k̑oph₂ós (compare Russian копыто (kopýto) 'hoof', копать (kopát’) 'to dig', Avestan safa 'hoof', Sanskrit śaphaḥ 'hoof, claw').
