From Middle English der (“small animal, deer”), from Old English dēor (“animal, beast”), from Proto-Germanic *đeuzan (cf. West Frisian/Dutch dier, German Tier, Norwegian dyr), from Proto-Indo-European *dheusom 'living thing' (compare Albanian dash 'ram', Lithuanian pl. daũsos 'paradise'), from *dheus- 'to breathe' (compare Lithuanian dùsti 'to sigh', Russian душа (dušá) 'breath; spirit'). For semantic development compare Latin animalis 'animal', from anima 'breath, spirit'.
