My husband (my/baby's sponser) is in the Army on Active Duty and is deployed. He won't be home for R&R until summer of 2008 (he tired for around the baby's due date, but it wasn't approved). I do have general power of attorney, and special power of attorney stating to "please enroll child in DEERS and Tricare, and get a passport for our child". What do I need to bring? Just the birth certificate, baby's social security card, and the power of attorney? Do I need to bring the baby with me? It's a 4 hour drive to the nearest military installation. If not married, you will need a paternity test. Some hospitals give out "to whom it may concern" notices with the same effect (ie...Baby Last Name was born to Mother's Name and Father's Name on Date of Birth at Hospital Name). Some DEERS processing center will accept this. Others will insist upon an official birth certificate. If you signed the papers in the hospital for the certificate and social, it will get to you in a week or two, certificate arriving first. You do not need her social yet. When you do have it, call your DEERS processing unit and give them her social.
