Can deer hear an artificial heart valve?
Q. I go deer hunting with my dad and he has an artificial heart valve. It isn't too loud, but I can hear it about ten feet away if it's quiet enough. Is it possible that we haven't shot any deer yet because the deer can hear the valve and know to stay away?

A. I am a deer hunter as well, the deer will more than likely sense your worrying over the thoughts you are having with your dads valve, just relax out there!! Become one with nature, de-stress!! Be grateful to hear the sound of your fathers new valve on life, and be happy he is out there with you!!! These times you will hold with you when he is gone. Make the hunting trips a special time for you and dad. I wish mine were still here to enjoy the hunt with me. Just relax the deer will be there when they are ready. Pray for dad to get the Ultimate buck. Life is short.

How can I keep deer from eating my tulips?
Q. We have a huge herd of deer that live in our wooded neighborhood and every spring I have to work hard to keep them from eating my tulips. I LOVE to have the deer visit but I dont want them to eat my plants. Anyone know of a safe home remedy I can use to prevent this? I have tried human hair and it does help but it is a pain to do because the hair blows away, etc... any other ideas? LOL... you guys are funny. I DO hunt actually and love venison but unfortunantly there are A LOT of deer here and I am in city limits so I cant hunt or shoot a gun in city limits. PLus I kind of like the deer. Also I have tried buying deer feed. That just attracts more deer. Then they eat the feed AND the tulips.

Any good deer-resistant plants for a shade garden?
Q. I am dealing with two problems in one here: 1. My front yard faces North and gets very little sun. 2. We have an outrageously large deer population that isn't too picky about food. I'm planning on creating two plots: one is about 2' by 10' and the other is a quarter-circle, about 5' in radius. Also, I live in Virginia, if that helps. Given that anything is better than nothing, suggest away! Flowering plants, decorative grasses, shrubs, herbs - I don't care!

Without hurting the deer, how to keep them out of a garden?
Q. For those with experience at keeping deer out of your garden, without hurting them or building a 20 ft. high fence, what remedies have you found that work at keeping them out?
Asked by N L - Thu Aug 2 13:15:59 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Deer are usually afraid of movement. You might try putting up some wind chimes or whirligigs. There are also some devices available that emit a sound that they can hear but humans can't that will keep them away. Try some of the on line outfitters ( www.basspro.com ) or the like to find something. You might also ask your local cooperative extension agent or humane shelter for some ideas.

How to keep deer and rabbit from eating my shrubs?
Q. Need suggestions - there are too many things out there but would like to hear from people who've had success in keeping deer and rabbit off blueberries and other bushes. I've seen products like powder you can sprinkle, sprays, etc. I'm really looking for something that's not expensive, and not harmful to kids, pets, and ok for use on fruit and vegetables. Thank you!

A. Nothing besides a fence will keep them out...Honestly. I work in gardens with rabbit and deer problems and the only sure fire way is a fence, a high fence. Properly bent over and dug in at the bottom. To DETER them there are a few things you an try. Chilli pepper spray, garlic drenches, sunflower hedges (bush sunflowers) hair...human, dog or cat hair in small cloth bags. Scatter these among your flower and vegetable beds. Try growing lavender and catnip around prized plants and plant marigolds. One thing I have found doesn't work is onions (alliums). Garlic has an effect but I tried growing ornamental alliums in a garden and they ate the tops off of all the leaves!

A. You can purchase "Big Cat" (lion and tiger) manure from the garden centers. This practice was discovered in China and is just now catching on in the states. They have learned that spreading this "dung" around your property scares off Rabbits, Bear, Raccoons, Groundhogs, and even Deer.

A. I put stakes (Green one you can buy anywhere; Lowe s, Walmart, Home Depot etc} in the ground around my beds and tie two rolls of 50lbs test fishing line, one about 12 and the other 36 from the ground. The deer cannot see the line and when they touch it, it scares them and they run away. I been using this for years and it works. The other thing you can do is to tie some line in the woods from tree to tree, thus; no more deer in the yard from the woods that is. They now come up my driveway, but that s when the stakes do there job. The nice thing about this is you don t hurt the deer and you save them for the hunters.

A. What are the odds of you going for something bigger than deer? What type of hunting are going to be doing and where? For me, I like a smaller compact rifle in a short action caliber and for smaller southern deer we have in KY a 243 is plenty. A 308 is enough gun for any white tailed deer you will ever find. If you are going to be hunting in rough country or in the woods where shorter shots under 150 or 200 yards are expected then a 30-30 would be good. Now for bigger, how much bigger, elk, moose or what? If you think you might go elk hunting one say down the road and want to be ready when you do, get a 30-06. If it was me I would get a short action 308 and wait till I knew I was going to be hunting something bigger to get a bigger… [cont.]

A. Took a bit of looking - thanks for the challenge!! "Dusting - Mounted trophies, like furniture, will collect dust. Therefore, periodic dusting is necessary. Remove from the wall and place the trophy on a table or bench low enough to allow you to reach all parts. Trophies can be dusted with a vacuum attachment or they can be wiped off with a soft damp cloth, always moving in the direction of the grain of the hair. Never vacuum or wipe a trophy head going against the grain of the hair. The eyes and nostrils can be cleaned with a damp cloth also. Cleaning - Some trophies become soiled to the point that they need additional cleaning rather than just dusting. When this occurs they can be washed with soap and water. Will whitetail buck deer grow antlers if they have been castrated?
Q. I have two 2 1/2 year old bucks. Last season they were very agressive durnig the rut. (October-January) I enjoy them mostly because of their antlers. In my home state law require that I keep captive deer until their death. But I am concerned about their agression. If some way they where to get out they could be very dangerous. This is why I want to castrate them to take away the aggression. Will this affect the growing of antlers? They are pets and are like big dogs most of the year. During and around the rut are the only time they are mean. Note: I do not recomend raiseing wild deer.
Asked by Sam - Fri Aug 31 12:34:03 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The effect of castration on antler development varies, depending on the age class of the deer and the stage of antler growth when the castration occurs. If a young fawn is castrated within the first few months, that deer will not develop pedicles and therefore never develop antlers. Older fawns that have been castrated have been documented of growing a permanent, small, knob-like mass of velvet. If an adult buck is castrated during antler growth and in the velvet, the lack of testosterone allows the velvet antlers to continue growing, omitting the velvet shedding stage and total ossification of antler. These antlers may go on growing for a long period of time creating large cactus racks. These antlers will not shed in the spring. A buck… [cont.]

A. I've tried just about everything because I have the same problem with white-tail deer. Select plants they do not like... cana lilies, rosemary, lavender, etc. Ask at your garden store... they definitely can help. Also try a product called Deer Scram. (Do a keyword search.) You sprinkle it around your yard and it supposedly keeps the deer away. I tried coyote pee (it comes in a bottle at the garden shop) but it didn't work. Also tried motion sensor lights. Didn't work. Deer get accustomed to these things and they figure out pretty quickly that nothing is going to happen. I've even found deer staring into my windows. Finally, I had to build cylindrical wire cages around all my tomatoes, lemons, and other plants. It's the only thing that's… [cont.]

What to use to give bleached deer antlers color?
Q. I have a bunch of old bleached deer antlers and was wondering what I could use to give them a newer natural look. Like some kind of stain. What colors of stain? Like a polyurethane? There are so many. And for the leather stain, Are there lots of (browns) color choices? Thanks everyone! I have gotten some great answers!
Asked by Calamity Jane - Mon Sep 14 20:02:06 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Colors of stain depends on the color you want the antlers to be. always start off with a light color. You can always go darker, you can NOT go lighter. Wood stain would be your best bet- I prefer wood stain/s. There are TONS of colors from dark dark stains to stains that only seal the wood. Also, don't use a polyurethane that has a high gloss- it's not natural looking. Go with a semi-gloss or no gloss. Apply with a rag or part of an old (clean) sock. That will help for a better, more even coat on the antlers.
