What if a deer suddenly crosses in front of your car?
Q. Hi, everyone. Last week, a college student from my community died in a car accident in trying to avoid a deer. I don't know exact details but I think she was driving on an area with 40 mph limit sign and deer warning sign posted. The article said she swerved onto trees as she was trying to avoid hitting a deer. It was especially tragic because she was such a bright, young woman who was gonna be an asset in this world. I imagined myself in her situation. What choice would I have made? Would I hit the deer straight-on instead of avoiding? Would hitting the deer decrease the chance of dying dramatically? I realize there is a remote chance anyone will face this situation in their life when driving. But I still would like to hear what is the… [cont.]

A. i am so sorry about your friend. it is possible she may have paniced as such an occurance is not an everyday thing. had she hit the deer, she still may have died if the deer was a large one as there would have been substantial damage. braking hard may have helped but then again it depends on the road conditions. The situation has many outcomes.

How to attract deer to an area in the shortest amount of time?
Q. My friend's home is in an area heavy populated with deer. They will visit his back yard during the day time but not at night when he has guests over. It is a nice site to see deer; to view & admire NOT kill. Any tips to lure them during the evening/night hours? Plant certain trees or flowers, etc?

A. The white tail deer loves to eat oats mixed with molasses. This will keep them coming for a long time. You can by this at any Agway or Blue seal outlet. Purple clove, apple tree's, small gardens with standing corn, and some juniper bushes, ceder trees for the bark is nutrition, blueberry bushes, raspberry bushes, tee berry's, perennial flowers, salt licks, or plant biologic. As long as there is water near by, shelter, and plenty of food, they will keep on coming. Make sure that if you start feeding them out of a trough to bleach it out 2Ce a year so that no deceases are spread like mad cow disease. This is contracted by too many animals by saliva. Lime disease is contracted by the deer tick. Raccoons will be around so rabies will most… [cont.]

How can I keep deer from eating my tulips?
Q. We have a huge herd of deer that live in our wooded neighborhood and every spring I have to work hard to keep them from eating my tulips. I LOVE to have the deer visit but I dont want them to eat my plants. Anyone know of a safe home remedy I can use to prevent this? I have tried human hair and it does help but it is a pain to do because the hair blows away, etc... any other ideas? LOL... you guys are funny. I DO hunt actually and love venison but unfortunantly there are A LOT of deer here and I am in city limits so I cant hunt or shoot a gun in city limits. PLus I kind of like the deer. Also I have tried buying deer feed. That just attracts more deer. Then they eat the feed AND the tulips.

How come Deer can live longer than humans when shot in the heart?
Q. When shooting humans in the heart, they either die instantly or die withing seconds. When you shoot a deer in the heart, He can run off for several meters. Why is this? Saids Doctors and common sense. How can you bring up movies?
Asked by Sabastien G - Tue May 13 02:25:15 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Humans don't die instantly- a man shot in the heart can still live for seconds, possibly over a minute (source: the military). A deer can run for a while with it's hear blown out also- mainly because of adrenaline. If you just shot it, and sit down, it will die soon, when you stand up and start yelling about what a big one you got... you will be tracking him for the next two hours.

How can I keep Deer and others out of my garden?
Q. I have a small 12 by 12 plot I just put in. My neighbors have had problems with deer and critters eating most of their plants. What can I do? I have little money to invest!
Asked by Jeremy S - Tue Apr 28 22:04:15 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Tall fence is about it. Perhaps a double-high layer of chicken wire would do it? Eight feet is best for deer. For shorter critters, it's best to dig in the fence at least six inches. An alternative is to scatter whole cayenne peppers throughout the garden, but watch out touching those yourself!

How do I keep deer out of my flower beds?

Asked by Susan - Wed May 2 15:55:26 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I put stakes (Green one you can buy anywhere; Lowe s, Walmart, Home Depot etc} in the ground around my beds and tie two rolls of 50lbs test fishing line, one about 12 and the other 36 from the ground. The deer cannot see the line and when they touch it, it scares them and they run away. I been using this for years and it works. The other thing you can do is to tie some line in the woods from tree to tree, thus; no more deer in the yard from the woods that is. They now come up my driveway, but that s when the stakes do there job. The nice thing about this is you don t hurt the deer and you save them for the hunters.

How do you stop deer from eating at hanging bird feeders ?
Q. We have bird feeders in our backyard that are hanging from posts. Deer come up to the feeders and slightly tip them so the seeds spill out onto the tray so they can lick the seeds off the tray. My husband wrapped chicken wire aroud the trays but that hasn't stopped them. HELP!!!
Asked by Janice L - Sat Dec 15 12:47:01 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. try putting a salt lick about a hundred ft away the deer will have something other to do then eat your bird food.or you can set up a deer feeder (if you live in the woods) in your back yard well away from the bird feeders my grandma had the same problem except it was a bear.and with my bird feeders i had raccons, squirrles, and opposoms.or if you have bb gun or pellet gun and you dont want the deer to come to your yard anymore shoot them with the bb gun it only gives them like a bee sting.belive me i ve been shot with one it hurts but only feels like a bee sting.just even try handging the birdfeeders up in a high tree branch where the deer cant reach them.

What is the quickest way to gut a domestic deer?
Q. I was driving home last night down the side roads because the traffic was at a stand still. I got slightly lost because it was dark and I ended up in some national park type setting and hit a deer. I didn't want to get caught so I tied it to the roof of my citroen bx car - white 1.58 enginer - and drove home. It sure was a mess to clean up but I eventually hosed most of the guts and brain mass off of the screen. However after this I am now left with a deer in my garage. I have hung it up to the main support to drain the blood but now Im pondering what's the best to get the meat off of the carcass and then who to give it too? A. Sounds like you have started well, You will need the right tools...i.e a sharp knife, Leave the animal hanging to begin and slice down the undercarriage, remove any entrails... now slice into the lower epidermis, near to the fat and remove the skin... you could make a good rug out of this? Now i would suggest you look up cuts of meat, if you have Hugh Fernley Whittingstall book this would be helpful, as it has all the photos...failing this I would suggest the local butcher wold do it for you...and offer him some of the produce...

A. This is the way I kept deer out of my garden. First of all I fenced it in which kept the smaller animals out. Then I took plastic rope and strung some aluminum cans on it and then strung it around the fence . tieing it on the fence post but leaving it sag in the middle. so the minute there is a touch to the fence the aluminum cans will clash together making a noise that will scare the deer off. It has worked for me now for 5 years

A. This is going to sound sooo weird to you, but I know for a fact that is works, we (my family and relatives all do this) You have all the men pee into milk jugs, then mix it half & half with water and spray it around the garden. It is the same concept as deer away, they just use coyete urine. The human sent scares them just as much, but you will have to repeat the process every week. Rain will wash the scent away.. Again I know this sounds weird

Will whitetail buck deer grow antlers if they have been castrated?
Q. I have two 2 1/2 year old bucks. Last season they were very agressive durnig the rut. (October-January) I enjoy them mostly because of their antlers. In my home state law require that I keep captive deer until their death. But I am concerned about their agression. If some way they where to get out they could be very dangerous. This is why I want to castrate them to take away the aggression. Will this affect the growing of antlers? They are pets and are like big dogs most of the year. During and around the rut are the only time they are mean. Note: I do not recomend raiseing wild deer.
Asked by Sam - Fri Aug 31 12:34:03 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The effect of castration on antler development varies, depending on the age class of the deer and the stage of antler growth when the castration occurs. If a young fawn is castrated within the first few months, that deer will not develop pedicles and therefore never develop antlers. Older fawns that have been castrated have been documented of growing a permanent, small, knob-like mass of velvet. If an adult buck is castrated during antler growth and in the velvet, the lack of testosterone allows the velvet antlers to continue growing, omitting the velvet shedding stage and total ossification of antler. These antlers may go on growing for a long period of time creating large cactus racks. These antlers will not shed in the spring. A buck… [cont.]

What is a good flowering plant that the deer will not eat?
Q. the deer keep eating my plants, i've sprayed pepper spray for deer prevention, but it only last a little while, & i always miss the next treatment.
Asked by mama of 4+extras? - Fri Apr 6 12:52:38 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are damn few things that deer won't eat when desperate for food. The only truly bullet proof flowering plant is the Dahlia. Occasionally however, bucks will do a Don Quixote fighting windmill imitation and annihilate the plant with their newly grown velvet horns. Fortunately, only late in the year when the plants are full grown and usually just one plant. The good news is Dahlias are spectacular and bloom til frost. I've seen deer eat onions, leeks, tomato plants drenched with hot pepper spray, rudbeckia, echinacea and countless other plants reputed to be deer safe. good luck.

A. I've tried just about everything because I have the same problem with white-tail deer. Select plants they do not like... cana lilies, rosemary, lavender, etc. Ask at your garden store... they definitely can help. Also try a product called Deer Scram. (Do a keyword search.) You sprinkle it around your yard and it supposedly keeps the deer away. I tried coyote pee (it comes in a bottle at the garden shop) but it didn't work. Also tried motion sensor lights. Didn't work. Deer get accustomed to these things and they figure out pretty quickly that nothing is going to happen. I've even found deer staring into my windows. Finally, I had to build cylindrical wire cages around all my tomatoes, lemons, and other plants. It's the only thing that's… [cont.]
