From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The even-toed ungulates is a paraphyletic taxonomic group that contains many hoofed animals such as pigs, peccaries, hippopotamuses, camels, chevrotains (mouse deer), deer, giraffes, pronghorn, antelopes, sheep, goats, and cattle, but excludes whales even though they share a common ancestor. They are ungulates whose weight is borne about equally by the third and fourth toes, rather than mostly or entirely by the third as in odd-toed ungulates (perissodactyls). Another distinguishing feature is the shape of the astragalus, a bone in the ankle joint, which has a double-pulley structure. This gives the foot greater flexibility. The name Artiodactyla for this group comes from the Greek words Artios, meaning entire or even numbered, and Dactylos for finger or toe. DNA sequence data indicate that this group is paraphyletic because whales are excluded. The more phylogenetically accurate group is Cetartiodactyla. There are about 220 artiodactyl species, including many that are of great nutritional, economic, and cultural importance to humans. From Wikipedia under the

I also found Cervidae but that seems to classify the deer only not other similar to them... Asked by Upper Class White Trash - Thu Jul 23 00:54:39 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Deer and antelope both belong to the order Artiodactyla, but different families - deer belong to the family Cervidae, and antelope to the family Bovidae (the same family as cattle, sheep, goats, etc.). You can therefore refer to deer as cervine, and antelope as bovine. One of the main differences between these two families is that cervids have antlers, whilst bovids have horns. Antlers are branched structures made entirely of bone (though they are covered in skin called velvet whilst growing), which are shed and regrown every year. Only males have them in all species except the reindeer, the only deer species in which both sexes have antlers (though the males' are larger and more elaborate). Horns are unbranched structures made of bone… [cont.] Answered by Leolupus - Thu Jul 23 12:01:07 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "artiodactyla" El hipopotamo del Zoo ya tiene compania - El Dia (Argentina) (Comunicado de prensa)
